"I can't do that. I have to pay rent." Jonny's thanks, and the fees moment: $675 for the petition, $1,440 for residency, $260 for the work permit. "I can't do that. I have to pay rent." Part 4 of 4 in "The close", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and Democrat for Congress in...

Su consejo, en español. The same advice, in Spanish, captioned in Spanish: find an immigration attorney, and, to citizens, recognize the privilege of being born here. Part 3 of 4 in "The close", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and Democrat for Congress in Utah's 4th District, and...

To prospective immigrants: get an immigration attorney to look at your case. To citizens: most of us got our citizenship by being born here, and she did not do anything to earn hers. Part 2 of 4 in "The close", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and Democrat for Congress in Utah's...

Seven years in the field. How she got here. Two years as a paralegal, seven in the field: she translated statements for victims of crime and abuse before she ever filled out an application. Part 1 of 4 in "The close", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and Democrat for Congress in...

$5,000 to $10,000, and years. $5,000 to $10,000 in attorney fees for the whole route: the petition, the waiver, the DS-260, then the interview abroad. Years, and really expensive. Part 5 of 5 in "The 10-year bar", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and Democrat for Congress in...

Hundreds of pages of evidence, about the petitioner. The hardship is the petitioner's to prove: finances, medical needs, the kids, what would happen if they had to follow you. Hundreds of pages of evidence. Part 4 of 5 in "The 10-year bar", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and...

The hardship has to be the citizen's, not the immigrant's. The waiver needs a qualifying relative, a citizen or green card holder parent or spouse, and proof of extreme hardship to that relative, not to the immigrant. Part 3 of 5 in "The 10-year bar", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat...

The permanent bar is not waivable. The I-601A waiver can lift the 10-year bar. Leave and come back without papers and it becomes the permanent bar, which no waiver lifts: ten years in your country, or stay undocumented and wait. Part 2 of 5 in "The 10-year bar", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine...

180 days without status: a three-year bar. Over a year: ten. Stay 180 days without status and leave: a three-year bar. Stay over a year and leave: a 10-year bar. Leaving is what triggers it. Part 1 of 5 in "The 10-year bar", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and Democrat for...

They are not coming here to be lazy. In almost every immigrant she has worked for: they want to work, contribute and support their families, and avoid being a burden on anyone. Part 8 of 8 in "Petitioner, public charge and the co-sponsor", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine combat veteran and...

Who can co-sponsor, and do they ever end up paying? Anyone who is a citizen and makes enough can co-sponsor. In her experience it rarely comes to them paying, because immigrants work to make sure it does not. Part 7 of 8 in "Petitioner, public charge and the co-sponsor", from the immigration series with Jonny...

Most friends are not willing to sign that paper. When the petitioner's income falls short, a joint sponsor signs the same contract. Two kids, a spouse and the immigrant make five people; most friends are not willing to sign for that. Part 6 of 8 in "Petitioner, public charge and the co-sponsor", from the immigration...

125 percent of the poverty line, for the whole household. Every applicant for residency needs an affidavit of support. The sponsor must earn 125 percent of the poverty line for the immigrant and their whole household, and sign a contract to support them. Part 5 of 8 in "Petitioner, public charge and the co-sponsor",...

Most Americans could not pass this income test themselves. The measures were written for American citizens who cannot meet them either, and without a work permit people end up working below minimum wage while they wait. Part 4 of 8 in "Petitioner, public charge and the co-sponsor", from the immigration series with...

Overstaying a visa is a civil violation, like a parking ticket. Overstaying a visa is a civil status violation, in the same category as a parking ticket. About four in ten undocumented people overstayed a visa; crossing without papers is a Class B misdemeanor. Part 1 of 3 in "Civil vs criminal", from the immigration...

An immigration benefit is a status, not money. Undocumented immigrants cannot get SNAP, Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. An immigration benefit means a status, like DACA or temporary protected status: the government saying it will not deport you. Part 5 of 5 in "Fees and the gatekeeping", from the immigration...

One empty box can get your application rejected. The rules change constantly. An empty box without N/A gets an application rejected, and a denied application for permanent residency now means deportation proceedings. Part 4 of 5 in "Fees and the gatekeeping", from the immigration series with Jonny Larsen, Marine...
